Getting a great wax result is a collaboration — and the 48 hours before your appointment matter more than most people realise. At Shapes Glow Studio, Sophie and our team notice the difference between a client who's prepped well and one who hasn't.
Hair Length: The Most Critical Factor
Wax needs something to grip. Hair should be at least 1/4 inch (about 6mm) long — roughly the size of a grain of rice. If you've recently shaved, wait at least 3–4 weeks. Very long hair (over 1cm) should be trimmed before your appointment.
The grain of rice rule: Pinch a small section of the hair between your fingers. If it's long enough to grab — roughly the size of a grain of rice — it's ready to wax.
Exfoliate 24–48 Hours Before
Gentle exfoliation the day before removes dead skin cells that can block follicles and cause ingrown hairs. A gentle body scrub or exfoliating mitt works perfectly. Avoid exfoliating on the day of your appointment — it makes skin more sensitive.
What to Avoid Before Your Appointment
- Moisturisers and oils on appointment day: these create a barrier that prevents wax from adhering
- Tanning or sun exposure: avoid for 24 hours before — tanned skin is more prone to lifting
- Retinoids and AHAs: avoid for 48–72 hours before — they thin the skin
- Alcohol: avoid for 24 hours before, as it can heighten sensitivity
What to Wear
Wear loose, comfortable cotton clothing — especially for leg, Brazilian or bikini waxing. Tight waistbands or synthetic fabrics immediately after waxing can cause irritation.
Managing Pain Expectations
First waxes are always more uncomfortable than subsequent ones. By your third or fourth wax, most clients report dramatically reduced discomfort as the follicle weakens and hair grows back finer. Timing your appointment away from your period also helps significantly.
Brazilian from $60, full legs from $80. Available at both our Vancouver and Surrey studios. Book online or call 604-736-6245.
