If you've been considering semi-permanent brow colour but aren't sure whether to book a brow tint or go for henna, this guide is for you. Both services are available at Shapes Glow Studio and we perform dozens of each every week.
How Brow Tinting Works
Traditional brow tinting uses a professional-grade oxidative dye mixed with developer. It penetrates the hair shaft and bonds chemically — the same fundamental process as hair colour, but formulated for the delicate brow area. Tint colours the hair only, not the skin. Results last 4–6 weeks on the hair.
How Henna Brows Work
Henna is a plant-based dye that coats the hair and also stains the skin beneath the brows. This skin stain creates a shadow effect that makes even sparse brows look fuller:
- On the hair: henna lasts 4–6 weeks (similar to regular tint)
- On the skin: the stain lasts 1–2 weeks, creating a filled-in shadow effect
The longevity answer: On the hair, both last about the same. The difference is what happens on the skin — henna's skin stain adds an extra 1–2 weeks of visible definition. Total visible result: henna wins by 2–3 weeks.
Which is Better for Oily Skin?
Tint performs more consistently on oily skin. The henna skin stain fades faster on oily skin types because natural oils break down the pigment more quickly — clients with oily skin often find the skin stain lasts only a few days rather than 1–2 weeks.
Which Looks More Natural?
Regular tint creates a subtle, natural result — mainly adding definition to existing hairs. Henna creates a more visible, defined look due to the skin stain, similar to a brow pencil or powder application. If you prefer the filled-in look, henna is ideal. If you want a very natural enhancement, tint may be the better fit.
Brow tinting from $25, henna brows from $50 (including shaping). Available at both our Vancouver and Surrey studios. Book online or call 604-736-6245.
