Dermaplaning and microdermabrasion are two of the most requested skin treatments at Shapes Glow Studio — and while they both promise smoother, brighter skin, they work completely differently and suit very different skin concerns. Here's Sophie B's honest guide.
What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning uses a sterile surgical scalpel at a 45-degree angle to gently scrape away the top layer of dead skin cells and vellus hair (peach fuzz). It's a manual, chemical-free exfoliation method. The result is instantly softer, smoother skin — and because the fine facial hair is removed, makeup applies noticeably more smoothly afterward.
Myth busted: Vellus hair does not grow back thicker or darker after dermaplaning. Peach fuzz is genetically fine hair — removing it doesn't change the follicle structure.
What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion uses a diamond-tipped wand to mechanically exfoliate the outermost layer of skin while simultaneously suctioning away dead cells. The suction also stimulates blood flow and promotes collagen production over time. Results develop progressively — most clients see the biggest improvement after a series of 4–6 treatments spaced 2–4 weeks apart.
Key Differences
- Dermaplaning removes vellus hair; microdermabrasion does not
- Microdermabrasion includes suction which stimulates collagen; dermaplaning does not
- Dermaplaning is better for a one-off pre-event glow; microdermabrasion delivers cumulative improvement
- Dermaplaning is not suitable for active acne; microdermabrasion can be adapted for mild congestion
Which Should You Choose?
Dermaplaning: Normal to dry skin, dull texture, fine lines, pre-event prep. Microdermabrasion: All skin types, enlarged pores, sun damage, uneven tone, long-term skin improvement. Both are $120 and available at our Vancouver and Surrey (7238 189 St #59, V4N 5M8) studios.
Sophie's recommendation: Before a wedding or photoshoot, choose dermaplaning. For long-term skin improvement, a course of microdermabrasion is the better investment. Many clients alternate between both monthly.
