It's the question we hear from almost every first-time threading client: "Is it going to hurt?" The honest answer is yes, a little — but far less than most people expect, and significantly less than waxing for most clients.
What Threading Actually Feels Like
Threading uses a thin cotton thread twisted to catch and pull hair from the follicle. The sensation is often described as a quick, repeated flicking or mild snapping on the skin — happening quickly across small sections, usually over in 10–15 minutes for a full brow shape. Most clients rate the discomfort a 2–3 out of 10.
First timer's tip: Threading moves quickly — the discomfort doesn't linger. Most clients find the anticipation worse than the experience itself. Within 30 seconds of starting, you'll know exactly what to expect for the rest of the appointment.
How it Compares to Waxing
For sensitive skin types, threading is generally gentler than waxing. Waxing applies adhesive to the skin surface and removes it — which can pull the skin itself. Threading only contacts the hair and the thread, not the skin. This makes threading preferred for clients on retinoids, blood thinners, or with sensitive skin.
Tips to Reduce Discomfort
- Don't schedule around your period — skin is more sensitive in the days before and during
- Avoid caffeine immediately before — it can temporarily heighten sensitivity
- Don't come in with fresh exfoliation on the brow area
- Communicate with your esthetician — Sophie adjusts pace and pressure based on client feedback
After Your Threading Appointment
You may notice mild redness or tiny pinkish bumps at the follicles for 20–30 minutes after threading — this is completely normal. It settles within an hour for most clients. Apply a gentle soothing toner or aloe vera if needed.
