IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) photo facial is one of the most effective treatments we offer at Shapes Glow Studio for targeting sun damage, hyperpigmentation, redness and uneven skin tone. Here's everything you need to know before booking.
How IPL Works
IPL uses broad-spectrum light pulses to penetrate the skin and target melanin (brown spots) and haemoglobin (redness/vessels). The light energy heats and breaks down these pigment cells, which the body then naturally flushes away — leaving clearer, more even-toned skin over the following weeks.
What IPL Treats
- Sun spots and age spots
- Freckles and general sun damage
- Uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation
- Redness and rosacea
- Broken capillaries on the face
- Overall dullness and loss of skin clarity
IPL is NOT suitable for: Very dark skin tones (Fitzpatrick type V–VI), recently tanned skin, those taking photosensitising medications, or pregnant/breastfeeding clients. Sophie will assess your skin during consultation.
Before Your Appointment
- Avoid sun exposure for 4 weeks before
- Stop retinoids and exfoliating acids 1 week before
- Come with clean skin — no makeup, SPF or skincare products
- Avoid self-tanner for 2 weeks before
What to Expect During Treatment
Eye shields are applied, a cool gel is spread on the skin, and the IPL handpiece delivers pulses across the face. Each pulse feels like a quick snap — most clients find it very tolerable. Full face takes 30–45 minutes. Brown spots often temporarily appear darker ("coffee grounds") before flaking off over 1–2 weeks — this means it's working.
Aftercare
- Apply SPF 30+ every morning for at least 4 weeks
- Avoid heat (saunas, steam, hot yoga) for 48 hours
- Do not pick at darkened spots — let them flake naturally
- No exfoliation or retinoids for 1 week post-treatment
